Saltillo ISD students paint designated parking spots

Body

Enduring the summer morning’s heat, Saltillo ISD students with the Beta Club and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America painted four school parking spots designated for veterans Wednesday, Aug. 7.

“It took about two days,” FCCLA sponsor and Beta Club co-sponsor Johanna West said. “We went out Thursday [Aug. 1] and filled in the spots, and on Wednesday, the students stayed after their workouts and painted stars that we’d also made. We didn’t really have to help them.”

The veteran spots had been designated for about a year but were undecorated until this service project happened, according to Beta Club co-sponsor Jennifer Ricketson. After receiving approval from Superintendent David Stickels, the students leaped at the opportunity.

“The kids were excited,” Ricketson said. “They love doing projects for others.”

Roughly 10-15 students helped on the project, some pitching in their time before work. Each parking spot took about a can and a half of paint to cover, according to West.

“The kids were really proud of themselves when they were done,” West said. “We wanted to make them [the parking spots] stand out.”

West said she wanted to “further the support” for community veterans who might attend events like sports games by doing this project.

“I like doing all of these projects,” West said. “I also like showing respect for [the] men and women that have served their country.”
