Wildcats get an overtime win on the road Tuesday

Yanez scores pair of goals

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats traveled to Texas High Tuesday night for a district rematch game. Sulphur Springs won the first match Feb. 21, This win started a four-game winning streak for the Wildcats.

Kevin Yanez got the scoring started for the Wildcats, scoring on a penalty kick. Isaac Gutierrez scored the final goal in regulation for the Wildcats, scoring on an assist from Yanez.

Yanez would go on to score the winning goal in overtime, making the score 3-2 on an assist from Uriel Santacruz.

“We went into overtime again, but did good with missing six starters,” Coach Alexi Upton said. “I love the fight in the this group!”

The JV team got the win as well, beating Texas High 5-0. Kevin Garcia scored a pair of goals for the Wildcats. Andrew Garcia, Joel Vasquez and Hector Hernandez each scored one goal.

The varsity team is now 13-6-5 on the season and 7-2 in district play. Their wins this season have included a 3-1 win over Caprock; Jackonsville, 1-0; Hallsville, 2-0; Seagoville, 2-1; Mesquite Poteet, 3-0; Community, 3-1; Greenville, 2-1; Lindale, 2-1; Texas High, 2-1; Royse City, 1-0; Greenville, 2-1; Lindale, 3-0; and Texas High, 3-2.

Sulphur Springs will play their final game of the season and their senior night Tuesday, March 17 at home against Royse City. The JV game will start at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
