PRINCETON — It was a busy weekend for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats soccer teams, with the Varsity team defeating Mesquite Poteet Friday night and the JV team finishing 3-1 in the Princeton JV tournament.

In Friday night’s game, the Wildcats hosted Mesquite Poteet with David Moreno getting the Wildcats on the board first on a goal that was assisted by Isaac Gutierrez. That was the only goal of the first half, and Sulphur Springs entered the locker room up 1-0.

In the second half, the Wildcats scored a pair of unassisted goals, one from Nabian Ramirez and one from Kevin Yanez, who scored a second chance goal on his own missed-penalty kick.

“It was an amazing game. It was great to beat my alumni; they were a talented group, and they are still trying to figure things out,” Coach Alexi Upton said of the 3-0 win. “It was great to get a goal from my center back DJ Moreno; he’s an amazing kid. Poteet kids I know, and the coach bragged about our press and hard work.”

After opening the Princeton JV Tournament with a pair of wins on Thursday, the team lost to Mesquite Friday 4-1. Andrew Garcia scored the lone goal for the Wildcats.

On Saturday in the second-place final, the JV team played Mesquite Poteet and won 2-1. Joel Vasquez scored on an assist from Nick Cantillo and Jorge Santacruz scored on a penalty kick.

The Wildcats will play again Friday, Jan. 31 at home against Lovejoy starting at 7:15 p.m.
