Sulphur Springs dropped two sub-varsity football games Thursday against foes from Forney

FORNEY 12,

SULPHUR SPRINGS 7

The visitors used two long touchdown passes to take a hard-fought junior varsity win.

The Wildcats scored first. The Sulphur Springs squad got the ball following an impressive defensive stand against the Jackrabbits. Sulphur Springs drove from near midfield a clever mixture of plays.

Starting quarterback Matthew Sherman threw to Colby Albritton three times in a row to net 16 yards. Sherman then picked up a key first down with a 16-yard completion to Cable Glenn.

The touchdown came on a pass from Sherman to Langston Bridges. Bridges caught the 14-yard scoring pass after the pigskin had bounced off the hands of a defender.

The extra point by Josh Tavera gave the home team a 7-0 lead with 6:17 left before intermission.

Forney struck twice for long scoring passes from quarterback Noah Garcia to Andrew Gafford. The scoring pass in the third period covered 63 yards. The fourth quarter connection was from 51 yards out.

The Wildcats tried to rally late.

A fake nifty punt from Albritton to Bridges netted good yardage, but a turnover ended the threat for Sulphur Springs.

Defensive coach Kurt McCain said Devon Franklin forced a fumble; Madison Martin recovered a fumble; and Bridges, Bryan Osnorio and Wyatt Smithson played well at linebacker.

“The entire defensive line played lights out,” McCain said.

On the offensive side, coach Mike Meador credited Bridges, Glenn, Adam Peckham and Albritton with good games.

“The JV fought hard, but unfortunately, they had another tough loss,” Meador added.

FORNEY NINTH 47

SULPHUR SPRINGS NINTH 28

Playing on the road was not kind for the freshman Wildcats, as they were popped 47-28 in Forney.

Sulphur Springs fell to 2-3 overall, 1-2 in district with the defeat.

“Tripp Smith, Nick Cantillo, C.J. Williams and Alexis Pasion were standouts. They played well on both sides of the ball. The team made a valiant effort in the second half to get back within 8 points, but turnovers and a lack of good tackling cost the Wildcats in the end,” said Jason Meskimen, Sulphur Springs coach.
