The Saltillo Lions hosted Avinger in their district opener Tuesday night and got a big 72-37 win.

The Lions took a few minutes to find their offense at the start of the game, but an alley-oop to Chris Boekhorst gave Saltillo a 5-4 lead with 3:15 left in the first quarter. Using the momentum from that big play, the Lions went on an 8-0 to finish the quarter, leading 13-4.

In the second quarter, Saltillo picked up the scoring and never allowed Avinger to find their flow on offense, outscoring them 17-7 to give them a 30-11 lead at the half.

Andrew Redburn got the second half started with a pair of 3-pointers, and Saltillo picked up right where they left off in the first half.

Avinger had their highest scoring quarter of the night posting 16 points in the frame, but Saltillo was still able to outscore them 23-16 to widen the deficit to 53-25 entering the fourth quarter.

Saltillo would add another 19 points in the final quarter to give them the 72-37 win.

Chris Boekhorst led the team with 26 points. Andrew Redburn and Gunner Tarver weren’t far behind, scoring 19 and 17 points, respectively. Other scorers for the Lions were Colby McCoy 6 and Coy Collins 4.

This win makes Saltillo 20-4 on the season and 1-0 in district.
