Lady Lions pick up big win on the road

PITTSBURG- The Saltillo Lady Lions traveled to Pittsburg Friday for a non-district match. The Lady Lions entered the day riding a four-game winning streak.

Saltillo set the tone early, holding Pittsburg to just six points in the opening frame, while scoring 22 points of their own. The Lady Lions kept the momentum going, outscoring Pittsburg 19-14 in the second quarter, to extend their lead to 43-20 at the end of the first half.

Despite their big lead, the Lady Lions didn’t slow down in the second half. Saltillo added another 25 points in the third quarter, before outscoring Pittsburg 14-9 in the final frame, winning the game , 80-44.

Seniors Chandler Bain and Anna Reeder were the leading scorers in the game, finishing with 18 points each. Fellow seniors Kristina Wade and Brittney Peeples were the next leading scorers, posting 11 points each.

Other scorers for Saltillo were Julianna Giles with eight points, Allie Lane with four points, Paisley Kastner with three points and Maddy Smith with three points.

The win improves the Lady Lions record to 7-2, and extended their wining streak to five straight games. The Lady Lions turned around and played again Saturday, this time hosting LaPoyner.

For the first time since their Dec. 1 loss to Gilmer, Saltillo found themselves playing from behind, trailing 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Lions bounced back with a strong second quarter, and were able to take a one-point lead at the half, leading 21-20.

Saltillo was able to outscore LaPoyner 15-11 in the third quarter, but the LaPoyner defense held the Lady Lions to just four points in the final frame, and LaPoyner was able to win the game by a final score of 41-40.

Reeder was the leading scorer again for the Lady Lions, finishing with 15 points. Bain was next with eight points, followed by Peeples who had seven points, Wade with six points and Lane with four points.

“We played a good game against the No. 10 team in 2A,” Coach Bill Giles said. “We had a chance to win it at the end, hopefully we learned from it.”
