SALTILLO — The Saltillo Lady Lions continue their strong campaign by opening district play with a 61-20 win over Avery at home Tuesday night. Saltillo got off to a fast start, outscoring Avery 22-2 in the first quarter.

The Lady Lions offense slowed down a bit from there, but the defense stayed strong the entire game, never allowing more than 8 points in a quarter. Saltillo led 34-6 at halftime, 49-12 at the end of the third quarter and ended the game 61-20.

Anna Reeder was the leading scorer for the Lady Lions, finishing with 24 points. Chandler Bain had 13, Brittney Peeples 8, Julianna Giles 5, Maddie Smith 4, Allie Lane 4 and Paisley Kastner 2.

“It was a good win for us. Defensively, the first half was probably the best we’ve had this year.” Coach Bill Giles said. “The girls were active, communicating and anticipating really well. We are getting in the habit of playing hard and competing the entire game. This makes us a lot better.”

The Varsity wasn’t the only team with a huge win, though, as the JV team also won 37-2, shutting out Avery the entire first half. Avery’s only 2 points came in the third quarter after Saltillo led 23-0 at halftime. Ending the third quarter up 28-2, they would go on to win 37-2.

Makensa Morris was the leading scorer with 10 points, Yadhira Alonso was right behind her with 9, Trinity White had 7, Reagan Speir 6 and Ofelia Cabrera 2.

“JV girls got after them! They played tough defense and team ball offensively. I am proud of them,” Coach Dalton Herndon said.

The wins make the Varsity Lady Lions 19-7 on the season and 1-0 in district, as the JV advances to 11-1 overall. The Varsity Lady Lions will play again Friday Jan. 10 in Union Hill at 6 p.m.
