MILLER GROVE — The Miller Grove Varsity girls and Varsity boys basketball teams hosted Yantis Tuesday night, with both teams walking away with huge wins.

The Lady Hornets got the night started, and Harli Watson set the tone, draining a 3-pointer to take a 5-2 lead. That would start a 14-0 run to finish out the quarter for Miller Grove. Watson made another 3-pointer in the frame, and Jorja Bessonett hit a jump shot at the buzzer to give the Lady Hornets a 16-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Hornets opened the second quarter, scoring 4 quick points and forcing Yantis to use a timeout with less than 1:15 played in the frame. Miller Grove continued the strong half and almost matched their point total from the first quarter, scoring 15 points as a team.

Coming out of the locker room and leading 31-6, Harli Watson began the second half with another 3-pointer, and Miller Grove was able to cruise from there.

Outscoring Yantis 11-3 in the third quarter and shutting them out completely in the fourth, the Lady Hornets won 56-9.

Harli Watson led the way for Miller Grove, finishing with 22 points, shooting as well from the free throw line as she did beyond the arc, making 7-9 free throw attempts. Bessonett and Lauren Bullard each finished in double-digits, scoring 11 points apiece. Lainy Burnett and Summer Coker also contributed offensively, scoring 8 points and 4 points, respectively.

VARSITY BOYS

The Varsity boys game started in similar fashion, with Matt Brignon hitting a 3-pointer to give the Hornets an early 5-3 lead, and they never looked back.

Going on a very strong run to end the quarter, the Hornets scored 10 points in the final 2:43 of the quarter. Kobe Robertson got a steal with five seconds left and passed ahead to Isaiah Billingsley for an open layup at the buzzer.

Starting the second quarter with a 20-4 lead, Miller Grove didn’t let their foot off the gas, continuing to play an aggressive full-court defense and creating a lot of points on turnovers. Leading 34-12 with less than 2 minutes to play in the first half, the Hornets went on a 6-0 run to close out the frame. They scored all 6 points on turnovers to give them a 40-12 lead at the half.

Yantis was able to find its offense, having its highest scoring quarter of the night to open the second half, but Miller Grove was still able to outscore them 15-10 in the frame. The Hornets only allowed 4 points in the entire fourth quarter to give them the 75-26 win.

Five Hornets finished in double-digits, with Robertson leading the way, finishing with 13 points. Right behind him was Lexton Sly and Matt Brignon, each finishing with 12 points and each draining a pair of 3-pointers. Billingsley also had 12 points, shooting 3-4 from the free throw line. Kagen Scott was the other Hornet in double-digits with 11. Other scorers for Miller Grove were Tanner Hensley 8, Riley Hasten 5 and Jacob George 2.

Miller Grove will play again Friday, Jan. 31 at home. The Varsity girls will play CHESS at 5 p.m. and the Varsity boys play PTAA at 6 p.m.
