Local volunteers keep projects, education going in Hopkins County

Body

The Hopkins County Master Gardeners are volunteers who work with the Texas Agrilife Extension Service to improve gardening skills throughout the community. Volunteers share gardening knowledge through community service and outreach, gardener training, and educational programs.

The Hopkins County Master Gardeners meet 10 a.m. to noon on the fourth Thursday of each month except holidays at the Hopkins County AgriLife building, 1200 Houston St. in Sulphur Springs, across from the Southwest Dairy Museum.

Interested people may come as a guest, become a member of the auxiliary or become a Texas Certified Master Gardener. Volunteers are involved in many community projects, so if anyone who would like to hang out with some nice people, some of whom are really Master Gardeners, is welcome.

JUNIOR MASTER GARDENER

Growing good kids by igniting a passion for learning, success and service through a unique gardening education is what the Junior Master Gardener program is all about.

The Junior Master Gardener program is an international youth gardening program of the university cooperative Extension network. JMG engages children in novel, “hands-on” group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment and cultivate the mind.

JMG also inspires youths to be of service to others through service learning and leadership development projects and rewards them with certification and recognition.

Children can get involved in exploring their world through meaningful activities that encourage leadership development, personal pride and responsibility, and community involvement. Youth involved in the program develop critical thinking skills and the ability to identify community concerns and take action to address them through individual group projects.
