The Hopkins County Commissioners Court met Monday for a regular session, which included approval of a building bid and a possible board appointment, as well as utility easements. Commissioners approved three requests from Farmers Electric Cooperative, Inc. to reroute existing electrical power distribution facilities:

• across County Road 2310 which is located approximately 950 feet west of CR 3345 in Pct. 2;

• across CR 3520 which is located approximately 12,650 feet to CR 3518 in Pct. 3; and

• across Quail Lane which is located approximately 1,100 feet southeast of Colquitt Road in Pct. 4.

“When you hear those [requests], those are new installations, and often, that means we’re growing,” said Hopkins County Judge Robert Newsom. “So when we see those, we should welcome them.”

Commissioners also approved a plat application, which was tabled during the regular session held Sept. 23, from Texas Ranchitos in Cumby. Pct. 4 Commissioner Joe Price stated he had personally looked at the site and verified the landowner does have water and sewer provided by the city.

The court also unanimously approved Bart Green’s appointment to the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center Board of Directors. Green, who served as a Jamboree team leader and National Jamboree Director for the Boy Scouts of America until his retirement, will serve as a representative for Pct. 4.

“He’s willing to serve,” said Pct. 4 Commissioner Joe Price. “I think he’ll be a good addition.”

Commissioners tabled approving a bid for a building located at the corner of Rosemont and Houston Streets, pending further discussion.

County Judge Robert Newsom read a resolution encouraging all citizens to actively participate in the 2020 Census. Accurate census information is critical to planning for future growth, development and social needs of Hopkins County.

Commissioners also discussed and approved previous meeting minutes; budget amendments and line item transfers; payment of bills, revenues, expenses, payroll and financial statements; any other grants or donations presented; personnel matters; disposal of asset requests; and any contracts, resolutions or proclamations presented.

The commissioners court session will meet for its next regular session at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28 in the first floor courtroom of the Hopkins County Courthouse.
