Grave marking of War of 1812 veteran to take place

The Craig Austin Rowley Chapter, General Society War of 1812 and the John Cavet Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812 will hold a grave marking ceremony for Corporal John Hooker, veteran of the War of 1812, in City Cemetery, 7th Street at West California Street in Sulphur Springs at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8.

He was born in Tennessee on July 15, 1792 and married Mary A. Reid in 1815. From 1817-1837, the couple had at least 10 children, all born in either Mississippi or Tennessee. By 1860, daughter Mary Minerva and husband Archabald Henderson had migrated to Texas and settled in Hopkins County. Other siblings followed as did John and Mary in 1869. John died on Feb. 25, 1879, and Mary died on Dec 8, 1882. Both are buried in City Cemetery, in Area 2D.
