PARIS — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats earned their second consecutive district championship Friday by shutting out the North Lamar Panthers 5-0 on the road. A strong first half helped pave the way, as the Wildcats clinched their first back-to-back district titles since 2005 and 2006.

The first half saw the Wildcats dominate right away with three goals. The first goal was scored by JJ Gomez on a penalty kick, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Later on, Juan Santacruz scored the second goal off an assist from Mateo Perez, bringing the score to 2-0. Jimmy Garcia scored the Wildcats’ third goal off an assist from Bernardo Chavez, raising the score to 3-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Wildcats added two more goals. Ernesto Alvarez scored the fourth goal off an assist from Garcia, making the score 4-0.

The fifth and final goal was scored by Gomez, his second, which was assisted by Bryan Medina. That scored held up for the rest of the game, as the Wildcats capped off a 5-0 win and a second consecutive district title.

Gomez led with two goals, while Alvarez, Garcia, and Santacruz added one each.

Chavez, Garcia, Medina, and Perez contributed one assist each.

With the win, the Wildcats finish the regular season at 10-2 in district and 14-5-6 overall. They will now focus on the upcoming playoffs. Coverage of the Wildcats’ playoff run will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.
