Lady Wildcats taken down at home, 66-24

The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats fell 66-24 at home to Liberty-Eylau Tuesday, Nov. 23 in a rare afternoon non-district basketball game at the high school gym.

The contest  was played early due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Fans saw action dominated by the Lady Leopards.

The Lady Cats, now 0-9, played hard and finished the game with just four players on the court due to foul troubles.

The only two Sulphur Springs girls to score, Addison Wall and Jasmine Taylor swished the net on 3-pointers. Wall popped the twine for 13 points including three 3-pointers; Taylor tallied 11 total points, nine of the points coming from long distance. Five of the six 3-pointers came in the second half for the Lady Cats.

Also seeing action for Sulphur Springs were Kyra Carter, E’Dream Jones, Aubrey Williams and Aaliyah Cheatum.

The visiting tall, athletic Liberty-Eylau squad, had three players in double digits. Ebonee Roquemore scored 14 with two 3-pointers; scoring 11 points was Jamyia Mongomery and Myah Hurd popped two 3-pointers and had 10 for the game.

The Lady Leopards jumped out to a 13-5 lead after one period and never trailed. Liberty-Eylau scored at least 10 points in each quarter, the Lady Cats did not reach double figures in any quarter.

The fierce battles for the basketball produced spirited play. A 17-5 lead with 5:15 left in the second frame, a Liberty-Eylau’s Bryana Block was given a technical foul. The Lady Cats could not take advantage of the break. Sulphur Springs was outscored 14-2 during the period and went into halftime trailing, by 20 points, 27-7. Roquemore pacing the visitors with eight points, six of the points from 3-point missiles.

The third quarter was more of the same as the Lady Leopards dominated play on the boards and scored 11 straight points to build the lead to 38-7.

The Lady Cats shooters found their range with Wall and Taylor tossing in 3-point buckets. The Liberty-Eylau team was still in control up 40-15. 

The fouls continued to pile up against the home team and Lady Cat head coach Erica Delley was whistled for a technical foul with just 41.2 second left in the third period as she questioned a call by referees. The third frame ended with Liberty-Eylau 47-16.

The visiting Lady Leopards, despite going to their bench, continued to do well from the floor. Liberty-Eylau went on a  19-8 run to end the game. Sulphur Springs coming up on the short end of a 66-24 score.

“We have a lot of things to work on. I’m grateful for the Thanksgiving break. We had the opportunity to get some rest and get healthy,” said Delley.” Our goal is to be ready by district and we will.”

The Lady Cats lost Monday, Nov. 22 at Mineola, 40-29. Their next game is Nov. 30 against Canton.
