C-P clinches share of district title

COMO — The No. 3 Como-Pickton Lady Eagles clinched their fourth consecutive district champioship Monday by taking down the Fruitvale Lady Bobcats 10-3 at home. Throughout the game, the Lady Eagles outplayed the Lady Bobcats and never gave them a chance, leading to the win.

Prior to the game, the Lady Eagles celebrated the career of their lone senior, Addi Monk, as this would be her final home game. Also honored was the late Hannah Pegues, who would’ve been a senior this year.

The Lady Eagles would jump out to an early lead in the first inning. Bella Romero and Gracie Thompson both scored, as Como-Pickton took an early 2-0 lead.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Lady Bobcats scored two runs in the third inning, tying the score at 2-2. The Lady Eagles would answer with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Paisley Watkins and Journey Brumley both scored, as the Lady Eagles reclaimed the lead at 4-2.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Lady Eagles added on six more runs in the sixth inning. Sanay Diaz, Romero, Thompson, Lexie Rainey, Monk, and Saylor Smith all scored, as the Lady Eagles increased their lead to 10-2.

Though the Lady Bobcats added another run in the top of the seventh inning, it wasn’t enough to make a difference, as the Lady Eagles finished off a 10-3 victory.

As a team, the Lady Eagles batted 8 for 31 (.258) from the plate. Smith led with two hits, while Sarah Corley, Monk, Rainey, Romero, Thompson, and Watkins added one hit each.

Romero and Thompson shared the title of leading scorer with two runs each. Brumley, Diaz, Monk, Rainey, Smith, and Watkins all contributed one run each.

Rainey earned the win in the circle. Across seven innings, she tallied three strikeouts, allowing only five walks, three hits, and three runs (one earned).

With the win, the Lady Eagles end the regular season at 7-1 in district and 28-3 overall. They also finished tied with the Alba- Golden Lady Panthers for first place in District 17-2A.

The Lady Eagles will play Alba-Golden Monday, April 22 in a seeding game for first place. The game will be at Lone Oak High School, beginning at 6 p.m.
