Bower: Hope game ‘demonstrates sincerity’ of message

COMO-PICKTON—Before the Eagles’ homecoming game Friday against Wolfe City, Como-Pickton CISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Bower delivered a supportive message to the visitors.

“While we may be competing against each other and cheering our students on from both sides of the field, we wanted to let you know that our school stands in solidarity with you for all the adversity that your community has had to face throughout this week,” Bower said.

Wolfe City resident Jonathan Price, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by one of the city’s police officers Oct. 3. The police officer, Shaun Lucas, was arrested on a murder charge Oct. 5. The city officially fired Lucas Oct. 8.

“You did not ask to have a negative spotlight placed on you, but we are proud of the way that you have stood strong in the face of such adversity,” Bower said. “We hope that this exchange between our student-athletes to our student-athletes demonstrates the sincerity of our community when we say that you are in our thoughts and prayers.”
