Bowlers are people who have talent to spare

This is certainly a joyous time of the year for most of us, but admittedly it can be stressful. So go bowling during the holidays and let it be stress relief. While bowling, think about these gems (my apologies in advance): In bowling you can get three strikes and you’re not out. Old bowlers never die, they just end up in the gutter. Some of us are infected with “E-Bowla.” What happens in the gutter stays in the gutter. Bowlers do it in alleys — oh, get your mind out of the gutter! Bowling is the only sport where eating might be involved. Being called a pinhead is not necessarily an insult. And, from bowling legend Don Carter, “One advantage bowling has over golf is that you seldom lose a bowling ball.”

And, if you ever get to thinking you are something special on the lanes, consider that a bowler named Ben Ketola staged balls on 10 lanes and, running from one lane to the next, rolled a perfect 300 game in 90 seconds.

The results below begin with the Thursday Commercial League’s Dec. 7 session and go through the Senior League’s Dec. 13 bowling.

The Keeping It PG squad had a great day in the Thursday Commercial League, vaulting into first place with a 15–5 record. Wilson’s Proformance stumbled but stands with Hooten’s Hardware in second with 14–6 marks. Keeping It PG’s Tristen Painter fired a 288 game to pace the men and Tarry Davison, rolling on the Graham International team blasted a 783 series. Kyra Jenkins of the Tierra Del Sol quintet is making a habit of besting the ladies, this week scoring a 204 game and 576 series Sunday’s This Ain’t Yo Momma’s Bowling League is on break until next year, so this is a good time to highlight some of the best performances of the season to date. This week will spotlight the best handicap scoring, thus far. To recap, handicaps are used in most leagues and amateur tournaments. A bowler’s average is subtracted from a standard — often 200 — and the handicap is 90% of the difference. This gives average bowlers a competitive chance against higher scoring players. This season’s ladies high handicap game belongs to Amanda Gunnels (season average 159) with a 245 and she also claims the high handicap series with a 710. Tommy Jenkins (average 147) leads the men’s handicap standings with a 272 game and 708 series.

The Fall Goldies continue to pace the Monday Trio League with a season mark of 17–7. Stone & Gang, Odd Ones, Sisco’s Crew, and Spare Me round out the leaders with winning records. Spare Me’s Debby Essary lit up the lanes with a 268 game and 629 series to lead the ladies. Doug Williams, rolling on the WWM trio, took high game honors with a 236 and the Odd Ones' Gordon Fulcher was on target for a 595 series.

Carrie’s Gang is still the team to beat in the Tuesday Mixed League with an impressive 20–4 record. Money B!, Odd Ones and Strikers follow with marks above .500. The Strikers' Steve Edwards was doing just that to score a 275 to best the men and Adam Thompson of Thompson’s Tornados stormed to a 715 series. The Odd Ones’ Kyra Jenkins again appears on the honor roll with a 233 game and 605 series to lead the ladies.

Wednesday’s Senior League continues to be competitive with nine of the 13 teams posting records of .500 or better. The Men Folk are still alone in first with a 42–18 tally. Strike Force is within striking distance, standing at 38–22 in second. Mine’s In The Gutter’s Lori Guffey was anywhere but the gutter, rolling a 222 for ladies high game and Kathy Price on the same squad scored a 547 series. Strike Force’s Robert Smith was on target to lead the men with a 232 game and 597 series.

Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
