Pageant first large event for director
Seven Hopkins County women gathered Saturday evening at the Civic Center to be the next Mrs. Hopkins County Senior title, and Wilma Thompson won the crown after being judged in four categories.
“I was really thrilled,” Thomp son said after the pageant. “It was something unexpected.”
This was the first time Thompson had entered the pageant, and she said she was very nervous prior to the pageant. However, she plans to enter it again next year.
“All of the contestants were nice,” Thompson said. “A lot of them do it every year.”
Right now, she’s just going to enjoy her crown, and Thompson will represent Hopkins County come September when the state pageant begins in Tyler. She also said she was invited to showcase her talent of story reading at the Riley Springs Jamboree.
For Senior Citizen Center Director Karon Weatherman, this pageant marked the 12th of its kind here in the county and was the first large event since COVID-19 hit. Last year’s pageant was canceled due to the virus.
“Everybody was really happy,” Weatherman said. “It’s like a sisterhood for them [the contestants]. People were excited to get out of the house.”
