Gary Alexander of Round Rock, Texas, led the 2024 Route 67 VW Road Trip caravan to a stop in Sulphur Springs on Monday, March 11, while making a Spring Break tour across the state.
US Highway 67, originally named the Bankhead Highway, was considered the first paved transcontinental highway in America.
The group of 20 vehicles started out from Texarkana on a westward path, with a goal of eventually arriving in Presidio later this week.
The City of Sulphur Springs marked 20 parking spaces around the plaza to accommodate the caravan and provided each vehicle with a welcome bag from local merchants.
In addition to dining and enjoying Sulphur Springs' downtown, the VW Road Trip crew was invited to drive over to Southwest Dairy Center and Museum to check out the giant cows, and see the museum. Other Volkswagons are expected to join up with the caravan along the way to share in the fun of the road trip.
'The mindset of many Volkswagon owners is that we start out prepared, but not knowing if we will make it to our destination or not,' Alexander commented. 'Many of the vehicles are vintage. We like following the roads less traveled, but we do carry parts and tools with us, just in case. VWs don't go that fast, and without air conditioning, we can feel the breezes, smell the smells of the countryside, and meet interesting people everywhere we stop. It seems that seeing Volkswagons always brings out the friendliness in people, and Sulphur Springs is a good example of that!'
