Miller Grove High School finishes second overall at District Academic UIL Meet

Miller Grove High School students brought home multiple individual and team trophies recently from the UIL District Academic Meet.

Individuals and teams placed in a number of contests, held at the Miller Grove campus Tuesday, April 2. The Lincoln-Douglas debate competition was also held on campus on Friday, April 5.

Katie Cotts placed fourth in calculator applications. Cotts also placed fourth individually in literary criticism. The literary criticism team, consisting of Cotts, Gabe Hayden, Cannon Ramsey and Alaina Serrano placed first, and will advance to the Regional Academic Meet in Plano this Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27. Hayden placed third individually, while Ramsey placed 11th and Serrano placed fifth. Hayden will compete individually at the regional meet.

The current events team, consisting of Yahir Santana, Sebastian Tovar and Logan Wright, placed third in their event and will move on to the Regional Academic Meet as well.

Jamilyn Hensley and Hannah Nalls placed first and second, respectively, in the editorial writing competition. Both will advance to the regional competition.

Mika Gray placed second and Janie Alberts placed fourth in the feature writing event. Gray will advance to the regional competition, and Alberts will serve as alternate.

Colleen Alberts took first place in the informative speaking competition and will advance to compete at the regional meet.

Mary Carter placed first in persuasive speaking and will move on to compete at the regional event.

Adali Velazquez placed first, and Lily Neidhart placed fourth in the poetry event. Both will advance to the regional competition, where Velazquez will compete and Neidhart will serve as alternate.

Gabe Harden earned first place in prose, with Janie Alberts and Paige Neidhart close behind at third and fourth places. Harden and Alberts will compete at the Plano regional event later this week, and Neidhart will serve as an alternate.

In ready writing, Jamilyn Hensley and Hannah Nalls placed first and second, with Mika Gray taking fifth place. Hensley and Nalls will advance to the regional competition.

The MGISD spelling team earned third place at district competition and will advance to compete at the Regional meet Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27. The team included Gabe Hayden, who placed third individually; Katie Cotts, who placed eighth; and team members Emma Knight and Cannon Ramsey.

Three MGISD students placed in the Lincoln-Douglas debate event and will advance to compete at the Regional meet. They are Colleen Alberts, first place; Mary Carter, first place; and Jace Knight, third place.

The MGISD speech team also placed first in Sweepstakes. MGISD earned second place overall.
