District takes step for better ground maintenance

Signage and wall pads still need to be installed inside Miller Grove’s multipurpose facility, but the last bits are on hold due to payment complications, superintendent Steve Johnson reported at the Monday board meeting.

“The near-final summary of finance shows we were overpaid by the state $118,000,” Johnson said. “They’re going to take that right off the bat, so we’re sitting on it right now.”

Bids are still being taken, and Johnson hoped to take action soon.

The construction process of the multipurpose facility cost the district $5,000 more in legal fees last year, Johnson reported to the board, and out of curiosity, Johnson requested a Region 8 survey of what legal counsel firms other districts employ. It turns out Miller Grove employs many of the same counsels. No change was recommended.

In other items, the board approved maintenance employee Kris Ivy to pursue a herbicide applicator’s license. It ensures the campus grounds will be easier to take care of, and board member Ray Sparks suggested Ivy apply for a pesticide license for landscaping as well.

“I think that’s a good idea,” board president Brandon Darrow said.

“I think it is, too,” Johnson said. “And he said he’s willing to do it.”

In other items, the board approved their votes in the Rains County Appraisal District to go toward Board of Directors Chairman Ken Player, whom board member Cole Middleton vouched for. The district has 12 votes total based on their slice of area inside Rains.

“The most [votes] is Rains [ISD] with 2,666 votes,” Johnson said as the rest of the board chuckled.
