The regular Como-Pickton CISD meeting was to the point Monday evening as the board approved a waiver for their summer feeding program and a technical notice for federal funds.

Superintendent Dr. Greg Bower explained that because more than 50% of the district’s students are eligible for free lunches, they are typically required to offer a summer feeding program. However, districts can file a waiver to avoid that.

Bower said it would be too dangerous for students to walk along the highway, and the district is located away from the bulk of their student population’s residences. He also expects the district may go over their budget on cafeteria expenses due to the sudden change from managed services to self-management.

In other items, the board approved a public notice relating to the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund. According to assistant superintendent Lydia Walden, it is to meet a technical requirement for the federal funds.

The board also voted for a resolution to appoint Barbara Stewart to the Hopkins County Appraisal District Board of Directors.

Bower also reported the parking lot expansion project is underway. Dirt has been moved, but concrete has yet to be poured. The project will expand the parking lot further to the east and hopefully make elementary pickup easier and safer.
