Thanksgiving great, no shopping this year

Thanksgiving was truly great this year for me and my family and we certainly feel very fortunate.

So many things in our lives have changed recently, all very positive and wonderful. We’re reaping blessings and we’re humbled by it all.

I hope everyone out there had a great Thanksgiving.

We went down to Rusk, in Cherokee County and got complete the trifecta - food, family and football.

(Since the Cowboys lost, I tried to concentrate on the other two).

The food was great, the traditional menu of turkey, dressing, corn, smashed taters, green beans wrapped in bacon (mmm), homemade rolls and gravy along with enough sweets and treats to give you a toothache until Christmas.

The gathering was held out in the country. We were munching vittles not far from cows, horses, a goofy goat and a docile donkey. Each farm animal glad they were not on the holiday menu.

I helped supervise the deep frying of the turkeys. The friends and relatives in charge did it carefully and were in complete control. I was just kind of fascinated by the whole process. Heating peanut oil to 325 degrees, then cooking the inverted suspended bird three to four minutes per pound powered by propane.

I couldn’t argue with success, it came out very tasty and went pretty quickly compared to the traditional method.. I don’t know if I can go back to an oven-cooked turkey again.

Just use common sense and you can deep fry a bird too.

We had leftovers and took some over to my sweet elderly Mom and she seemed to enjoy our visit more than the food. I am so thankful she has great neighbors and home health nurses to care for her.

I am also thankful for the decision I made not to go shopping on Black Friday.

I have done that before and it was not pretty.

We ventured to the metroplex and I went into a store, minding my own business, looking for a bargain.

Well this particular store had a big table in the middle (this was pre-Covid) full of all sorts of clothing that was marked down. It looked harmless enough.

I grabbed the arm of long-sleeved green sweater in this bargain bin. The only problem was so did this hyper customer who looked wired on caffeine by the look in her glazed eyes. We were in for a tug of war. I just wanted to see the size and price of the sweater. She was more serious about the item. She was not giving an inch and I let go of the garment and she won and I left. I’d had enough fun. She smiled like she’d won the lottery, clutching the now stretched sweater against her purse.

I walked a few doors down with my son to an electronic store. We settled into a comfy couch taking in sports on a huge plasma TV. Shopping is hard work. We rested until we were rescued from the mayhem and taken safety back home way from crazed sweater snatchers.

I hope your holiday was great and you didn’t eat too much.

Thanksgiving is a great holiday and I try to keep the spirit of being thankful, an “attitude of gratitude” in my heart all during the year.
