Wildcats sit with 10-2 record over the break

Hurst leads team with 4 wins

With the UIL suspends all contests and practices through March 29, the Sulphur Springs Wildcats find themselves on a hiatus during a pivotal point in their season.

The Wildcats currently have a record of 10-2 while they wait to resume play. Sulphur Springs opened their season with an impressive 10-0 win over Lindale in the Tyler Lee tournament. Hayden Hurst got the win, going five innings on the mound, allowing just two runs on three hits. Matthew Singleton had the hot bat in the game, knocking in a pair of runs and scoring twice.

After losing their next game against Tyler Lee, the Wildcats answered back by winning their final three games in the tournament. The first was against No. 11 Hallsville, whom they shut out, 6-0.

Next, Sulphur Springs took down Waxahachie in a 1-0 pitchers’ duel. Jake Davis got the win for the Wildcats, going 6.1 innings pitched, allowing six hits and just one walk. Austin Crouse got the save, coming in to record the final two outs. Aidan Walker drove in Aiken Owens in the bottom of the second to score the only run of the game.

Finally, Jaxon Chaney was able to shutout Forney, as the Wildcats won 3-0. Chaney threw a complete game, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out nine.

Sulphur Springs kept the momentum going after the Tyler Lee tournament, defeating North Lamar, 3-1, in a preseason matchup. Crouse got the win, not allowing a single run in his five innings of work. Hurst worked the final two innings of the game to pick up the save. Hurst also had an RBI in the game.

Riding the four-game winning streak, the Wildcats entered the Wylie East tournament on March 5 and opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over Lake Highlands. Will Sims picked up the win in a dominant complete game performance. Sims allowed both runs, only one of them being earned, on just five hits.

Next, the Wildcats defeated North Forney, starting the game with a threerun bottom of the first. Working with a lead for the rest of the game, Hurst got the win, going six innings without allowing a run.

Sims had the hot bat, going two for three at the plate, while driving in one run and scoring twice. The Wildcats picked up a 6-1 win over Liberty to push their winning streak to seven games before finally losing a close 4-3 matchup to Lake Highlands in their final game of the tournament.

Since then, Sulphur Springs has played just two games, defeating Royse City in their district opener March 10. Sulphur Springs trailed 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning before putting together three runs in the frame to give them the 6-5 win. The Wildcats also beat Brownsboro, 10- 2, March 12, in their final game before the UIL suspended all contests.
