Looking to get their first win
Offensive coordinator Matt Young and defensive coordinator Kurt McCain sat down with members of the press Wednesday for the Wildcats weekly press conference. The two coaches answered questions addressing last weeks loss to Kaufman, as well as looked ahead to this weeks Homecoming battle against Crandall.
When asked about how the players handled losing such a close game, McCain said “Defensively it hurt them. They felt it, but it was really good to see that. You fight that hard and it doesn’t come out the way you wanted, it should hurt, but I think by the time we got here Monday they were ready to refocus and get started on Crandall.”
McCain then began to look ahead and this weeks opponent, the 2-1 Crandall Pirates.
“Offensively they’re explosive,” McCain said. “So defensively it’s going to be another game like it was Friday against Kaufman, we’re going to have to battle for 48 minutes and going to have to play hard the whole game,” McCain added. “But I think we have a chance to limit what they do, but they’re very good.”
“The challenge for us, is the same it is every week, put the ball in the end zone,” Young said about his team’s offense. “What we’re looking for is our kids to play really really hard, play with a lot of emotion and enthusiasm. If our kids go do that, then we’ll see what the scoreboard looks like at the end.”
The coaches also spoke about how much their team has improved throughout the season.
“I think we’re at a point where the improvement is visible,” McCain said. “If we can just get our kids to believe that they’re getting better each week, then I think we’re going to be okay.”
This week’s game is an important one for the Wildcats, as it is both their district opener as well as their Homecoming game. When I asked Young how the players would handle the emotions of the game, he was confident that they would be prepared.
“When the lights come on, it’ll be time to play. There will be a little bit of excitement that it’s Homecoming and a little bit of a buzz during the day, but I think they kind of naturally get that from being around each other,” Young said. “They know there will be a pretty good crowd.”
Last year Sulphur Springs ended their season with a 72-44 win over Crandall, and they will certainly be looking for a similar outcome this time around. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, with Homecoming festivities being held before the game. Coverage of the game will be in Wednesday’s edition of the News-Telegram.
