Wildcats improve to 5-2-1 after busy weekend

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats had a busy weekend, playing a number of games, starting with a match against Princeton Thursday.

David Moreno got things started on a penalty kick, tying the game up at 1-1. Omar Hernandez followed by scoring on a free kick, and Edgar Salazar scored on an assist from Alan Hernandez, leading Sulphur Springs to a 3-1 win.

“I’m very proud of the boys because we were down 1-0 for most of the first half,” coach Alexi Upton said. “We won a penalty kick and dominated the second half. Great work from our boys!”

The Wildcats bounced back Friday, defeating Mesquite Horn 1-0. The lone goal of the game came from Alex Yanez and was assisted by Omar Hernandez.

“We are looking good,” Upton said, noting that the wind played a big role in the game. “The boys are really rolling.”

Finally, on Saturday Sulphur Springs took on Wylie East who entered the game with a 6-1 record. Uriel Santacruz scored the first Wildcat goal of the game. Josh Tavera followed him with an unassisted goal of his own before Omar Hernandez scored on a penalty kick.

Finally Joel Pasion added the fourth goal of the game, thanks to an assist from David Moreno, giving Sulphur Springs the 4-1 win.

“I’m so proud of the boys. They came out and outplayed them,” Upton said. “We were shaped great and scored a lot of goals off counters.”

Sulphur Springs exits the weekend with a 5-2-1 record, and are undefeated in their last six matches. The Wildcats have yet another busy weekend ahead of them, with matches against Kilgore, Paris and Sunnyvale this coming weekend. Sulphur Springs returns home Tuesday, Jan. 26 to host Pleasant Grove at 7:15 p.m.
