Wildcats extend winning streak to four games

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hosted Lindale Monday night for a district rematch game. The Wildcats won the first matchup 2-1 in an overtime game on Feb. 14.

Jose Salazar got the Wildcats on the board first, scoring on an unassisted goal; it was his first of the year. After that, Kevin Yanez was able to extend the Wildcat lead to 2-0, scoring on a free kick. Finally Alejandro Diosdado was able to put the game away, scoring on an assist from Uriel Santacruz.

“We’re proud of Uriel [Santacruz] the freshman. He scored his first goal and assist in his first two varsity games,” Coach Alexi Upton said. “Our first complete game, we played so well and took our chances well! I’m proud of of Jose Salazar’s first goal this season.”

The JV team got the win as well, defeating Lindale 4-0. Edgar Salazar had a pair of goals. Andrew Garcia and Joel Vasquez each knocked in a goal as well.

This win makes the fourth consecutive win for the Wildcats, defeating Texas High, 2-1; Royse City, 1-0; Greenville, 2-1; and now Lindale, 3-0. Sulphur Springs is now 12-5-5 on the season and 6-1 in district play.

The Wildcats will play Friday, March 6 at Mount Pleasant. Mount Pleasant is 6-0 in district play and the one team that has beaten Sulphur Springs so far. The JV game will start at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
