ALBA — The Cumby Trojans were tripped up in their district opener Tuesday, falling 58-43 to the Alba-Golden Panthers. Though they fought hard, they were outplayed when it mattered most, leading to a disappointing loss.

The first quarter started with the Panthers making a two-pointer. The Trojans evened the score at 2-2 when Dakari Johnson made a two-pointer.

The Panthers then made a two-pointer and a pair of free throws, pulling ahead 6-2. A three-pointer by Jace Evans trimmed the score to 6-5.

Following a Panthers two-pointer, the Trojans pulled ahead following a two-pointer and a pair of free throws by Chett Vaughan, giving Cumby a 9-8 lead.

The Panthers took the lead again on a three-pointer and two-pointer, pulling ahead 13-9. The Trojans closed out the first quarter with a two-pointer by Jack Petty, trimming the score to 13-11 as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter opened with the Panthers scoring seven consecutive points, increasing their lead to 20-11. Evans then made a three-pointer, bringing the score to 20-14.

The Panthers continued their strong gameplay with eight straight points, extending the lead to 28-14.

After Evans made another three-pointer, the Panthers responded with a pair of two-pointers, bringing the score to 3217. This was followed by a pair of free throws by Chett Vaughan, making the score 32-19.

Following another two-pointer by the Panthers, the Trojans ended the second quarter with two free throws by Chett Vaughan, bringing the score to 34-21 going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the third quarter began with the Trojans scoring on a three-pointer from Evans and a two-pointer from Johnson, cutting the score to 34-26. The Panthers then scored seven consecutive points, raising their lead to 41-26.

The Trojans then scored on a Chett Vaughan three-pointer, making the score 41-29. Following a Panthers two-pointer, Evans made a two-pointer, bringing the score to 43-31.

After the Panthers made another two-pointer, Chayton Vaughan made a two-pointer, cutting the score to 45-33. Following another Panthers two-pointer, the Trojans closed out the third quarter with consecutive two-pointers by Evans, trimming the score to 47--37 as the third quarter concluded.

The fourth quarter began with Lane McCraw making a two-pointer, cutting the score to 47-39. But from there, the Panthers caught fire, scoring eight straight points to build their lead to 55-39.

A two-pointer from Chett Vaughan brought the score to 55-41. After a Panthers three-pointer, the Trojans closed out the game with a two-pointer from Chett Vaughan, as the Panthers handed Cumby a 58-43 loss. Evans finished as the Trojans’ leading scorer with 18 points. Chett Vaughan wasn’t far behind with 15 points. Rounding out the scoring was Johnson with four, and McCraw, Petty, and Chayton Vaughan with two points each.

With the loss, the Trojans fell to 0-1 in district and 7-9 overall. They will be back in action Tuesday, welcoming the Simms Bowie Pirates to Cumby Gymnasium.
