Jackson Evans goes 4/4 from plate

SULPHUR BLUFF — The Cumby Trojans put an end to their three-game losing streak Tuesday with a 7-2 road win over the Sulphur Bluff Bears. In a game where it rained on and off, and the Trojans fell behind 2-1 early, the Trojans would score six unanswered runs to pull away with a 7-2 victory.

The Trojans came to the plate first, but were retired in order after Jace Evans struck out, Clayton Vaughan grounded out, and Clay Krotky hit a pop fly ball for an out.

The Bears came to the plate next, where they faced Jace Evans on the mound. The Bears were retired in order, following a pair of strikeouts and a ground out, leaving a scoreless tie after the first inning.

The second inning began with Jackson Evans and Matt Liston hitting singles. After Adrian Zepeda and Caleb Morgan both struck out, Lane McCraw walked, loading the bases. However, Braylon Boggs struck out on the following at-bat, ending the Trojans’ turn.

The Bears started the bottom of the second inning with a pair of singles. Three outs followed after a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts, as the score remained 0-0 through two innings.

The third inning began with Jace Evans hitting a pop fly ball for an out and Vaughan grounding out. After Krotky walked, Jackson Evans hit an RBI single, driving Krotky home and giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

Though the inning continued after Liston was hit by a pitch, Zepeda lined out after that, ending the Trojans’ turn.

The bottom of the third started with a pair of strikeouts. After a single, an RBI single, tied the score at 1-1. Another RBI single followed, giving the Bears a 2-1 lead. After a single, another strikeout followed, bringing the third inning to a close.

The fourth inning kicked off with Morgan grounding out. After Mc-Craw was hit by a pitch and Boggs safely reached base on a fielder’s choice, Jace Evan hit an RBI single, driving McCraw home and tying the score at 2-2.

After Boggs was caught stealing home, Vaughan walked. Their turn ended when Krotky struck out.

The Bears were retired in order during the bottom of the fourth inning, as Jace Evans recorded three consecutive strikeouts.

The Trojans quickly loaded the bases to begin the fifth inning, as Jackson Evans hit a single and both Liston and Zepeda walked. After Morgan struck out, McCraw reached base on an error, and both Jackson Evans and Liston scored, giving the Trojans a 4-2 lead. Their turn ended after Boggs and Jace Evans struck out.

For the bottom of the fifth inning, Jackson Evans relieved Jace Evans on the mound. The Bears were retired in order, as Jackson Evans struck out three straight batters.

The sixth inning started with Vaughan striking out. The bases loaded soon after when Krotky and Jackson Evans both hit singles and Liston walked. Despite Zepeda hitting a fly ball for an out, Krotky and Jackson Evans both scored on an error, raising the Trojans’ lead to 6-2.

Morgan reached base on an error next, and Liston scored in the same sequence, extending the lead to 7-2. Their turn ended after McCraw struck out.

The bottom of the sixth inning began with a strikeout. Though the Bears gained a base runner on a walk, two more strikeouts followed, ending the sixth inning.

The Trojans were retired in order to begin the seventh inning, as Boggs struck out and both Jace Evans and Vaughan both grounded out.

The bottom of the seventh started with a ground out. After a single, two strikeouts brought the game to a close, as the Trojans capped off a 7-2 road victory.

As a team, the Trojans batted 7 for 30 (.233) from the plate. Jackson Evans led the way, batting a perfect 4 for 4. Jace Evans, Krotky, and Liston added one hit each. Jackson Evans, Krotky, and Liston were the leading scorers with two runs each, while McCraw added one run.

Jace Evans earned the win on the mound. Across four innings, he struck out 10 batters and only gave up six hits and two earned runs. In his three relief innings, Jackson Evans recorded eight strikeouts, only allowing one hit and one walk.

With the win, the Trojans are now 4-2 on the season. Their next game is set for Friday, when they welcome the Miller Grove Hornets to Ben K. Green Memorial Park.
