Jayden Evans tallies three hits

CUMBY — The Cumby Trojans ended their four-game losing streak last Monday by edging out the North Lamar Panthers freshmen team 11-10 at home. After trailing for the majority of the game, a late rally would prove successful, as the Trojans won in walk-off fashion.

The first inning would be scoreless, as both defenses played well from the beginning. The Panthers would take the lead in the second inning with a pair of runs, pulling ahead 2-0.

In the third inning, the Panthers scored three more runs, extending their lead to 5-0.

The Panthers continued to play well in the top of the fourth inning, adding two more runs and extending their lead to 7-0. The Trojans finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jaxon Hudson scored a run, trimming the score to 7-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Panthers scored two more runs, bringing the score to 9-1. The Trojans responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jayden Evans and Jace Evans both scored, as Cumby trimmed the score to 9-3.

After the Panthers were held scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, the Trojans scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chayton Vaughan, Jayden Evans, and Jace Evans scored, as the Trojans trimmed the deficit to 9-6.

The Panthers would add one more run in the top of the seventh inning, extending their lead to 10-6. The Trojans then mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. Matt Liston scored first, bringing the score to 10-7.

Soon after, Vaughan and Jayden Evans scored, trimming the score to 10-9. On the next atbat, Canyon Talley hit a 2-RBI double, bringing Jace Evans and Channing Herman home, as the Trojans capped off an 1110 walk-off victory.

As a team, the Trojans batted 12 for 29 (.414) from the plate. Jayden Evans led the way with three hits. Jace Evans and Hudson tallied two hits a piece, while Montgomery Benton, Gunner Campbell, Herman, Liston, and Talley added one hit each.

Jace Evans and Jayden Evans shared the title of leading scorer with three runs each. Vaughan added two runs, while Herman and Liston both scored one run each.

Benton started the game at pitcher. Across 2 1/3 innings, he allowed five runs (two earned), one hit, and one walk, tallying one strikeout.

Vaughan pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing four runs (one earned), three hits, and three walks, managing one strikeouts. Herman earned the win in the final two innings, striking out five batters and allowing just two walks and one run.

With the win, the Trojans improved to 6-11 overall. They resumed action Tuesday, traveling to Fruitvale to take on the Fruitvale Bobcats.
