Win first game of the season

TYLER — The Cumby Trojans snapped their three-game losing streak Thursday by taking down the Tyler All Saints Trojans 46-26 at Mewbourne Field. Cumby would play well in all facets of the game and shut down All Saints when it mattered most, leading to the win.

After Cumby won the coin toss, they elected to receive, starting the game on offense. Unfortunately, their first drive resulted in a three and out, forcing them to punt.

All Saints’ first drive would see them gain an early first down. Soon after, they were forced to punt.

Cumby would score the first points of the game when Chett Vaughan returned the punt for a 70yard touchdown. Dakari Johnson would then rush into the end zone for a twopoint conversion, giving Cumby an 8-0 lead.

All Saints’ next drive didn’t last long, as two plays in, Cumby got the ball back when Jusber Nena recovered a fumble. However, Cumby’s ensuing drive wouldn’t yield any results either, as a pair of incompletions and short runs caused them to turn the ball over on downs.

All Saints would then embark on a long drive, highlighted by several long catches. This would bring the first quarter to an end, with Cumby on top 8-0.

Two plays into the second quarter, All Saints would get on the board with a 32-yard field goal, trimming Cumby’s lead to 8-3.

After Cumby received great field position on a free kick out of bounds, they immediately went to work moving the ball down the field, highlighted by a 30-yard run from Hendrix Walker and a 17-yard catch from Chayton Vaughan.

A big run from Johnson and a defensive penalty would aid Cumby. Eventually, they capped off a 10play drive with a two-yard touchdown run from Chett Vaughan. Their two-point attempt would fail, however, as Cumby extended their lead to 14-3.

After All Saints recovered an onside kick, They would embark on a long drive, attempting to score before halftime. They would cap off a 12-play drive with a five-yard touchdown run. They would succeed on their two-point attempt, trimming Cumby’s lead to 14-11.

Cumby would get one more drive in the second quarter, which was set up by a good kick return by Braylon Boggs. A 30-yard catch by Channing Herman and a long run by Chett Vaughan would put Cumby in scoring position.

Cumby would add onto their lead when Chett Vaughan connected with Chayton Vaughan for a nine-yard touchdown pass. Chett Vaughan would then connect with Kolby Vandiver on the two-point attempts, increasing Cumby’s lead to 22-11.

After the ensuing kickoff, the second quarter came to a close, with Cumby leading 22-11 at halftime.

All Saints received the ball to start the third quarter, but their first drive didn’t produce any results, as they turned the ball over on downs.

Cumby would only need three more plays to increase their lead, doing so when Chett Vaughan scored on a 35-yard touchdown run. He would then rush into the end zone for the twopoint attempt, extending Cumby’s lead to 30-11.

All Saints would score again when they returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. A successful extra point would cut the score to 30-18.

Cumby would score again when Boggs returned the next kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown. Walker would rush for the twopoint attempt, building Cumby’s lead to 38-18.

After All Saints recovered an onside kick, they once again failed to move the ball down the field, turning the ball over on downs.

Cumby’s following drive was started with a pair of strong runs from Walker. Four plays later, Chett Vaughan once again found Chayton Vaughan for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Walker would then score the two-point conversion, increasing Cumby’s lead to 46-18.

The ensuing kickoff brought the third quarter to a close, with Cumby leading 46-18.

All Saints would once again turn the ball over on downs as the fourth quarter began. Cumby’s next drive would result in a three and out, which forced them to punt.

All Saints would then embark on another long drive. Their 13-play drive ended with a 10 yard touchdown run. A successful two-point conversion cut the score to 46-26.

After a good kick return by Boggs, the Trojans would effectively end the game with a 18-yard catch from Herman. Following another play, the game came to an end, as Cumby capped off a 46-26 victory.

Chett Vaughan completed four of 10 passes for 71 yards, throwing two touchdowns. He also was Cumby’s leading rusher, racking up 80 yards on nine carriers and scoring two touchdowns.

Caleb Morgan completed one of two passes for 18 yards. Johnson would tally 54 rushing yards on six carries. Walker had 26 rushing yards on four attempts, and Boggs tallied 10 yards on three rush attempts, and scored a touchdown on a kickoff return.

Chayton Vaughan was the leading receiver, catching three passes for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Herman hauled in two passes for 47 passes.

Defensively, Johnson was the leading tackler with 10 tackles. Herman wasn’t far behind with seven. Morgan came up with five tackles.

Justin Green, Nena, and Walker all came up with four tackles apiece. Montgomery Benton, Gunner Campbell, Stoney Gall, Robert Goode, Jorge Reyes, Josh Salazar, Canyon Talley, and Chett Vaughan all had one tackle each.

Johnson and Morgan would also come up with one sack each.

With the win, the Trojans are now 1-3 on the season. Their next game will be Friday, when they welcome the Trenton Tigers to Frazier-Lawrence Field for their homecoming game. Homecoming festivities will begin at 7 p.m., with kickoff set for 7:30.
