Chett Vaughan racks up 213 rushing yards
CUMBY — The Cumby Trojans began their district schedule strong Monday by taking down the Detroit Eagles 52-28. Throughout the game, the Trojans would outplay the Eagles on both sides of the ball and never gave them a chance leading to the win.
After winning the coin toss, the Trojans elected to receive the ball to start the game. They would start the game with 42 and 10-yard runs by Chett Vaughan.
On the third play of the game, the Trojans got on the board when Chett Vaughan connected with Braylon Boggs for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Chett Vaughan would then rush into the end zone for the two-point conversion, giving them an 8-0 lead.
The Eagles’ first drive would see two decent runs. After an illegal substitution, a negative run forced them to punt. However, a pair of offsides penalties on the Trojans gave them a fourth and short situation. Despite this, an incomplete pass on fourth down turned the ball over to the Trojans.
The Trojans’ next drive began with an incomplete pass and a short run from Dakari Johnson. This would be a first down from Chett Vaughan.
After a false start and an incompletion, the Trojans scored again when Chett Vaughan broke loose for a 51-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt would fail, however, as the Trojans extended their lead to 14-0.
The Eagles’ following drive would see several good runs. After a pair of penalties and a sack threatened to end their drive, they would pick up a first down on a big catch. Soon after, the first quarter came to an end, with the Trojans leading 14-0.
As the second quarter started, the Eagles’ drive started to stall. On a fourth down, the Trojans got the ball back when Jusber Nena recovered a fumble.
Unfortunately, the Trojans’ next drive lasted only one play, as a bad snap would be recovered by the Eagles.
Four plays later, the Eagles finally got on the board with a seven-yard touchdown run. A successful two-point conversion would trim Cumby’s lead to 14-8.
Following an illegal kick out of bounds and a decent run, the Trojans got on the board again when Chett Vaughan ran for a 50-yard touchdown. Soon after, Johnson would run into the end zone for a two-point conversion, increasing the Trojans’ lead to 22-8.
After a short return, the Eagles would get on the board again with a 77-yard touchdown run. Their twopoint attempt would fail, however, as Cumby’s lead was trimmed to 22-14.
The Trojans appeared to score again when Boggs returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. However, an illegal block in the back would negate the score.
It didn’t take long for the Trojans to get those yards back, as a 60-yard run by Hendrix Walker and a 22-yard catch by Chayton Vaughan brought the ball to the one-yard line. On the following play, Chett Vaughan scored on a oneyard touchdown run. The two-point attempt would fail, as the Trojans increased their lead to 28-14.
The Eagles managed to get a first down to begin their next drive. However, their drive stalled immediately after, and they turned the ball over on downs.
Following a 24-yard run by Walker, the Trojans scored once more when Chett Vaughan rushed for a 21-yard touchdown. The two-point attempt failed, as the Trojans extended their lead to 34-14.
The Eagles’ next drive began with a 12-yard run. Immediately after, the Trojans got the ball back when Josh Salazar recovered a fumble.
After an offsides penalty, the Trojans scored again when Boggs broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run. The two-point attempt failed once again, as the Trojans’ lead increased to 40-14.
After four more plays from the Eagles, the second quarter came to an end, with Cumby leading 40-14 at halftime.
The Eagles got the ball to start the third quarter. They would embark on a long, 11-play drive which was capped off by a twoyard touchdown run. A successful two-point conversion cut the Trojans’ lead to 40-22.
After a free kick out of bounds, the Trojans would score again when Chett Vaughan rushed for a 62--yard touchdown. The twopoint attempt failed again, as the Trojans increased their lead to 46-22.
The Eagles’ next drive resulted in a three and out, forcing them to punt.
The Trojans’ next drive looked to stall early after a pair of penalties and an incompletion. Despite this, they would score again when Chett Vaughan found Boggs for a 66-yard touchdown pass. The two-point attempt failed once more, as the Trojans extended their lead to 52-22.
Three plays later, the third quarter came to an end.
The fourth quarter started with the Eagles turning the ball over on downs. However, the Eagles got the ball back three plays later after intercepting a pass thrown by Channing Herman.
The Eagles would respond with a nine-play drive, capped off by a 47yard touchdown catch. An unsuccessful two-point conversion cut the score to 52-28.
The Trojans would fumble on the first play of their next drive, giving the ball back to the Eagles. Six plays later, the game ended, as the Trojans polished off a 52-28 victory.
This would be Cumby’s first district win since 2021, which, coincidentally, was also against Detroit.
Chett Vaughan completed three of six passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns. He made his biggest mark on the ground, rushing for 213 yards on nine carries and scoring five touchdowns.
Boggs would finish with 90 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. He also caught two passes for 66 yards, both of which resulted in touchdowns. Chayton Vaughan caught one pass for 22 yards.
Walker would finish with 78 rushing yards, and Johnson had three.
Defensively, Herman was the leading tackler with 18 tackles. Johnson was second in tackles with 12.
Robert Goode also had double-digit tackles with 10. Other tacklers include Boggs, Nena, and Salazar with eight each, Sonny Pierce with six, Montgomery Benton and Jarred Patterson with five each, Jaxon Hudson and Walker with four each, and Noah Fuentes, Justin Green, and Kolby Vandiver with two each.
With the win, the Trojans are now 1-0 in district and 2-4 overall. Their next game is Friday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Maud to face off against the Maud Cardinals.
