AVINGER — Both the varsity girls and the varsity boys teams for Saltillo traveled to Avinger Friday night, and both teams entered the night undefeated in district play. The girls team came in at 7-0 and the boys team, 5-0.

The Lady Lions got the night started with a huge opening quarter in which they held Avinger to just 3 points while scoring 17 points of their own. It was never much of a contest from that point on with the Lady Lions outscoring Avinger in each quarter.

The second quarter was the closest Avinger played Saltillo, only being outscored by 1 point in the frame. The Lady Lions led at the half, 27-12.

Saltillo opened the second half with another blowout quarter, outscoring Avinger, 19-3. They added 9 more points in the fourth quarter to secure their 55-22 win. Jocelyn Ochoa and Al

Jocelyn Ochoa and Allie Lane were the leading scorers for the Lady Lions, finishing with 9 points each. Right behind them were Brittney Peeples and Chandler Bain, who each had 8. Other scorers for Saltillo were Anna Reeder, 6, Julianna Giles, 5, Maddy Smith, 4, Paisley Kastner, 3, and Kristina Wade, 3.

“Anytime you win on the road, it’s a good win. The officials allowed physical play, and we responded well,” Coach Bill Giles said. “Balanced scoring is a result of awesome team work. I’m proud of this team.”

The varsity boys followed and also set the tone in the first quarter, starting the game off with an 11-5 run. Saltillo added another 10 points in the second quarter to give them a 21-12 lead at the half.

The Lions opened the second half with their highest scoring quarter of the night, posting 21 points in the frame.

Avinger outscored Saltillo, 11-7, in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough. Saltillo walked away with the win, 49-34.

Chris Boekhorst led the way for Saltillo, finishing with 23 points. Coy Collins also finished in double-digits with 10 points. Other scorers for the Lions were Gunner Tarver, 9, Dillon Beadle, 4, and Andrew Redburn, 3.

Saltillo will play again Tuesday, Feb. 4 at home against Bloomburg. The varsity girls start at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity boys to follow.
