Cumby ends season on high note

CUMBY — The Cumby Lady Trojans ended their season on a high note last Monday, edging out the Wolfe City Lady Wolves 17-15 at home. Despite trailing for much of the game, an 11-run rally in the sixth inning helped the Lady Trojans come out on top, as Cumby finally put an end to their 10-game losing streak.

Prior to the game, the Lady Trojans celebrated the career of their lone senior, Lilly Campbell, as this would be her final high school softball game.

The Lady Wolves landed the first blow, scoring a trio of runs in the top of the first inning and taking a 3-0 lead. The Lady Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Ella Hone scored on a steal of home, trimming the score to 3-1.

In the top of the second inning, the Lady Wolves added another run, extending their lead to 4-1. The Lady Trojans would answer with a trio of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Campbell, Jacie Morales, and Bella Faulknor all scored, as the Lady Trojans tied the score at 4-4.

After a scoreless third inning, the Lady Wolves scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning, pulling ahead 7-4. The Lady Trojans got on the board again when Kadee Pettit scored on a steal of home, trimming the score to 7-5.

The Lady Wolves would add six more runs to their lead in the top of the fifth inning, increasing their lead to 13-5. The Lady Trojans scored again in the bottom of the fifth inning when Campbell launched a solo home run, cutting the score to 13-6.

After the Lady Wolves were held scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Trojans went on a tear in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring 11 runs. Faulknor and Kinslee Dowdle began the scoring run with a pair of runs, trimming the score to 13-8.

Consecutive runs by Harly Pence, Summer Smith, and Jenna Elmore would bring the score to 13-11. Soon after, runs by Campbell and Horne tied the score at 13-13.

Faulknor then scored anothe run, giving the Lady Trojans a 14-13 lead. Pettit scored next, extending their lead to 15-13.

On the next at-bat, Pence launched a two-run home run, where Dowdle also scored, to bring the score to 17-13 before the Lady Trojans’ turn ended.

The Lady Wolves tried to fight back with a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Despite this, the Lady Trojans managed to hold strong, preserving a 17-15 victory.

As a team, the Lady Trojans batted 13 for 33 (.394) from the plate. Faulknor and Pence led the way, both going a perfect 3/3. Campbell and Dowdle added two hits each, while Elmore, Horne, and Pettit tallied one hit each.

Campbell and Faulknor shared the title of leading scorer with three runs each. Dowdle, Horne, Pence, and Pettit scored two runs each, while Elmore, Morales, and Smith added one run a piece.

Faulknor earned the win in the circle. Across seven innings, she tallied five strikeouts, along with 15 runs (five earned), 14 hits, and one walk.

With the win, the Lady Trojans end their first season under Madison Allen at 1-9 in district and 2-182 overall. They will look to improve in the off-season and return to the playoffs next year.
