Lady Lions pick up pair of close wins

Saltillo up to 7-3

SALTILLO — The Saltillo Lady Lions continued their strong start to the season last week with a pair of victories. They would first earn a comfortable home win over Rivercrest, followed by earning a hard fought win over Sam Rayburn.

For their first game, Nov. 20, the Lady Lions took down the Rivercrest Lady Rebels 48-38. After falling behind at halftime, a strong second half propelled them to a win.

The first half would be closely contested, as each team played well early on. This would result in a 9-9 tie at the quarters end.

The second half was also closely contested, as both teams showed no signs of slowing down. Rivercrest would outscore the Lady Lions 12-7 in the second quarter, pulling ahead 21-16 going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Lady Lions would catch fire in the third quarter, as they were determined not to let the game slip away. The Lady Lions outscored Rivercrest 20-8 in the third quarter, pulling ahead 36-29.

The fourth quarter was once again a tight battle, as both teams fought hard for the win. In the end, the Lady Lions outscored Rivercrest 12-9 in the fourth quarter, picking up a 48-38 victory.

Gabby Ross finished as the Lady Lions’ top scorer with 22 points. Shelbi Ricketson also scored in the double-digits with 11 points. Rounding out the scoring was Addi Pipkin with six, Ryleigh Redar with five, and Lani Dean with four.

The following day, Nov. 21, the Lady Lions traveled to Ivanhoe to take on the Sam Rayburn Lady Rebels. In an intense battle, the Lady Lions managed to edge out a 39-35 victory.

The first quarter would set the tone for the game early on, as both teams played hard and tough. The Lady Lions would hold a 12-8 lead at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter would be more of the same, as both teams continued their strong gameplay. Though Sam Rayburn outscored the Lady Lions 8-7 in the second quarter, the Lady Lions held a 19-16 lead going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, both teams continued their strong gameplay, and didn’t show any signs of stopping. The Lady Lions outscored Sam Rayburn 11-10 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 30-26.

The final quarter was more of the same, as both teams continued to battle hard. In the end, a 9-9 tie in the fourth quarter led to a 39-35 win for the Lady Lions.

Redar would take top scoring honors with 12 points. Addi Pipkin also scored in the double-digits with 10 points. Rounding out the scoring was Ricketson with nine, and Kenzi Pipkin and Ross with four each.

With these wins, the Lady Lions are up to 7-3 on the season. They resumed action Tuesday, traveling to Canton to face off against the Canton Eaglettes.
