Improve to 10-3
HOOKS- The Saltillo Lady Lions traveled to Hooks Saturday for their final non-district game of the season. The Lady Lons entered the day after winning their last game over North Hopkins by a final score of 93-14.
Saltillo set the pace in the opening frame, getting out to a quick 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Lions kept building their lead in the second quarter, holding Hooks to just two points in the frame. Saltillo scored 15 points of their own, taking a 31-9 lead at the end of the first half.
The Lady Lions defense kept the strong play going in the second half, allowing just four points in the third quarter. Saltillo scored another 15 points of their own in the third frame, before cruising to a 58-24 win.
Saltillo shared the workload offensively, having three players finish in double-digits. Senior Chandler Bain was the leading scorer, racking up 16 points. Just behind her was fellow senior Anna Reeder who ended with 15 points. Also finishing in double-digits was Kristina Wade who added 11 points of her own.
Other scorers for the Lady Lions were Brittany Peeples and Allie Lane who each ended with eight points.
“I liked what we did defensively,” Coach Bill Giles said. “We didn’t shoot the ball really well tonight, but we can survive those games when we play defense.”
The Saltillo junior varsity had a great game as well, getting out to an 18-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Lions kept their strong play gong with a 28-5 lead at the half, before cruising to a 47-15 win.
“We came out shooting the ball well in the first quarter,” Giles said. “We didn’t play great defensively in the third quarter, but other than that it was a well played game overall.”
Both the Lady Lions varsity and junior varsity teams now have 10-3 records on the season. Saltillo returns home Friday to host Avinger for a district match. The junior varsity boys are set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity girls and varsity boys to follow.
