SALTILLO- The Saltillo Lady Lions hosted Denison Tuesday for a non-district battle. The Lady Lions entered the game on a 10-game winning streak.

Saltillo opened the game in a similar fashion to how they have started most of their games during this win streak, with their defense firing on all cylinders. The Lady Lions allowed just two points in the first quarter, and took a 10-2 lead into the second frame.

The second quarter saw much more offense from both teams, as Saltillo almost doubled their output from the first quarter. The Lady Lions posted 18 points in the frame, and allowed Denison to score eight points, leading 28-10 at the end of the first half.

Saltillo opened the second half with yet another strong quarter, this time outscoring Denison 17- 8. In the fourth quarter the Lady Lions had their highest scoring frame of the night, and they walked away with a 65-28 win.

Kristina Wade was the leading scorer for Saltillo, posting 14 points in the frame. Joining her with double-digit performances were Brittany Peeples and Allie Lane who had 13 points and 11 points respectively.

Other notables for Saltillo were Chandler Bain with eight points, Paisley Kastner with six points and Julianna Giles who had five points.

“We were a little shorthanded missing a starter,” coach Bill Giles said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well, but we really got after it on the defensive end.”

The win makes 11 consecutive for the Lady Lions, improving their record to 18-3 on the season.

The junior varsity had an impressive showing for Saltillo as well, winning the game by a final score of 38-21.

“We got off to a good start and played hard on both sides of the ball,” Giles said. “We came out a little turnover prone in the third quarter, but other than that we played well.”

The Lady Lions are back in action Tuesday with a road game against Avinger. The junior varsity boys are set to begin at 4:30 p.m with the varsity girls and varsity boys teams to follow.
