After a very strong campaign, in which the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats finished as district champs, they now have their opponent for the opening round of the playoffs. The Lady Cats will travel to Athens Friday to face Nacogdoches, with the game set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Sulphur Springs ended their regular season with a 16-7 record and a 9-3 record in district play. After losing two of their first three district matches, the Lady Cats bounced back, winning eight of their final nine games, including their last five consecutive games.

Sulphur Springs hasn’t just been winning their district games, however, but they have largely done so by blowing out their opponents. In their current fivegame winning streak the Lady Cats have defeated Texas High, 52-34; Marshall, 45-27; Pine Tree, 60-17; and Longview, 59-38.

Sulphur Springs will face Nacogdoches in the opening round, a team that has not had an easy go this season. Although they made the playoffs, the Lady Dragons went 8-14 this season and won just four of their 10 district games. Nacogdoches has faced a pair of Sulphur Springs’ district opponents, Longview and Hallsville, losing both games by double-digits. The Lady Dragons ended their season on a rough note, winning just two of their final eight games.

The Lady Cats, winners in nine of their last 10 games, enter the postseason with a ton of momentum and will hope to use that to their favor to make a playoff run. A recap of Friday’s opening round playoff match between Sulphur Springs and Nacogodoches will be published in the Wednesday, Feb. 17 edition of the News-Telegram.
