AVINGER — The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears started district play, winning on the road Tuesday night, 46-20 against Avinger.

Sulphur Bluff opened with a strong first quarter, outscoring Avinger 11-2. The second quarter saw both teams struggling to score, totaling for a combined 11 points between the two teams, and the Lady Bears led 17-7 entering the half.

Sulphur Bluff was able to add to their lead in the third quarter, outscoring Avinger 13-7, making the score 30-13.

The Lady Bears put the game away in the fourth, having their best quarter of the night and capping off the 46-20 win.

Skylar Stanley led the way for Sulphur Bluff, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds, both of which were a game high. Many others contributed to the district opener win, including Jada White, who ended the night with 6 points and seven rebounds; Bailey Neal had 6 points on a pair of 3-pointers; Alley Collett had 5 points and pulled in nine rebounds; Angel Brown and Tori Raine each had 5 points;, and Dalena di Donato had 4 points, six steals and five rebounds.

“We played great defense and started reading the passes in the second half of the game,” Coach Zandra Peyton said.

Sulphur Bluff will play again starting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14 at home against Bloomburg.
