Saltillo Lions Athletics girls basketball, both junior varsity and varsity, emerged victorious last weekend at Rivercrest, with the JV team being named tournament champions.

JUNIOR VARSITY

JV won three out of three games during the tournament. In their first game, they scored 37-19 against Honey Grove, putting up double-digit points in both the second and fourth quarters.

In their second game against Chisum, Saltillo won 40-23. As Chisum barely managed 6 points per quarter, Saltillo only failed to put up fewer than 10 points per quarter in the third quarter.

In their third game against Commerce, Saltillo outmaneuvered the team 51-20, putting up an impressive 16 points in the first quarter alone.

JV team member Mattie Goldsmith put the highest amount of individual points at 40, with next five highest other individual scores netting the following: Ofelia Cabrera (22), Regan Speir (19) Trinity White (12), Yadira Alonso (9) and Makenna Gurley (7).

Head coach Dalton Herndon said it was a "good game after an embarrassing loss at Martins Mill.”

“We outworked and out hustled our opponents today. [The girls] shared the ball extremely well, offensively. [I’m] proud of this group," Herndon said.

VARSITY

The varsity team beat Rivercrest 62-20 on Saturday. During the first quarter, Saltillo stopped River-crest from putting up any points while Saltillo put 22 points on the board.

The second quarter saw 6 points, while the third and fourth followed with 18 and 16 points, respectively, for Saltillo.

Individual scoring is as follows: Chandler Bain

(18), Brittney Peeples (17), Anna Reeder (11), Allie Lane (10), Maddy Smith

(4) and Paisley Kastner (2).

"It was a good game for us defensively,” Herndon said. “[We] shot the ball well from the outside, and it opened up our inside game."

JV now holds a 3-1 record, and varsity’s record is 1-1. The Lady Lions’ next game is Nov. 19 at Saltillo against Maud.
