The non-district games are just a memory as Cumby and Como-Pickton start district football action this week.

COMO-PICKTON

AT QUINLAN BOLES

The Eagles are coming off an uplifting 24-23 homecoming win over Trenton on Oct. 4.

“We were down 6-7 at the half, and then down 15-6 in the third and came back to win 24-23. Our kids played the second half with tons of heart and desire to win. We had some big plays on defense and stops when we really needed them,” said Ronnie Green, Como-Pickton head football coach. “We had long drives on offense, and we recovered an onside kick between the drives.,The win was great but especially coming from behind to do it. I am extremely proud of our them and the fight that they showed. It is a good win to finish the pre-season. We start district this week with Boles. We have a big week ahead of us. “

The Eagles trek to Quinlan to face Boles as 30-point favorites.

“The win over Trenton is big sending us into district. We had to come from behind to win, and I think our team took a big step and got a lot stronger this week. Boles will play hard and has some good skill kids. We will have to stay with our blocks, take care of the ball and make tackles,” Green said.

MUENSTER AT CUMBY

The District 9-2A, DII championship could be decided Friday, Oct. 11 Cumby’s Frazier-Lawrence Field. The Trojans (4-2) take on Muenster (3-2) at 7:30 p.m. The teams are the top two picks in district.

Muenster is a 17-point favorite in the district opener for both squads.

“We match up better with Muenster this year than we did last year. I am sure that Coach (Brady) Carney misses those kids that graduated way more than the people that played them,” said Tom Dracos, Cumby head football coach.

Muenster runs a Wing T offense and on defense operates primarily from a 4-3 formation.

“We are 0-0 with the start of district, and this is for the championship. We have to do everything this week in a way that shows that it matters. We have to bring great effort to everything we do. Our kids know what is riding on this, and they are doing everything they can to get it. I think coming off the loss is an opportunity for us to grow. The kids have come in ready to improve and have had a great week so far,” the coach said.

Taking on the top district pick has brought out the best in Cumby.

“We have shown great resiliency and focus this week. It’s going to be a great Friday night battle,” Dracos said.
