Eagles take victory against Cumby, 9-1

WINNSBORO — The Como-Pickton Eagles swept the season series against the Cumby Trojans Friday night with a 9-1 victory at Winnsboro High School. After a close game early on, the Eagles’ offense started clicking in the third inning and never cooled off, leading to the win. The game was originally supposed to be played in Cumby, but was moved to Winnsboro due to wet field conditions at Cumby.

The Eagles came to the plate first, and quickly gained a runner after Dalton Morgan hit a double. However, three straight outs followed after Tucker LeCroy and Christian Gilbreath both struck out, and Kobie Wright grounded out.

The Trojans came to the plate next, where they faced LeCroy on the mound. After a strikeout, the Trojans gained a runner on a dropped third strike. After this, a line out and another strikeout brought the first inning to a close.

The Eagles began the top of the second inning with Sean Carpenter hitting a double. Unfortunately, three straight outs followed after Hayden Potts and Braxton Andrews both struck out, and Cade Childress grounded out.

The bottom of the second inning started with the Trojans hitting a single. This was followed by three consecutive outs on two strikeouts and a sacrifice bunt.

The top of the third would see the Eagles dig themselves into a hole early on, as Kevin Hernandez struck out and Morgan grounded out. This was followed by LeCroy being walked. After LeCroy stole second base and made it to third base on an error, Gilbreath would hit an RBI single, bringing LeCroy home and giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

After Gilbreath made it to third base following two errors, Wright would hit an RBI single, driving Gilbreath home and extending the lead to 2-0. On the next at-bat, Carpenter swatted an RBI triple, bringing Wright home and raising the score to 3-0. The Eagles’ turn ended after Potts struck out.

The bottom of the third inning started with a pair of strikeouts from LeCroy. After a double, an RBI double would give the Trojans a run, trimming the score to 3-1. This was followed by a ground out, ending the third inning.

The Eagles would be retired in order during the top of the fourth inning, as Andrews, Childress, and Hernandez all struck out. The bottom of the fourth inning started with a fly out and a strikeout. Thought the Trojans would gain a runner on a walk, a strikeout brought the fourth inning to a close.

The top of the fifth kicked off with Morgan being hit by a pitch. This was followed by LeCroy hitting a sacrifice bunt to move Morgan to second base.

After Gilbreath hit another sacrifice bunt to move Morgan to third base, Wright would bring Morgan home with an RBI double, bringing the score to 4-1. The Eagles’ turn ended when Carpenter grounded out.

The Trojans were retired in order during the bottom of the fifth inning, as LeCroy recorded three consecutive strikeouts.

The Eagles would go down in order to begin the sixth inning, as Potts struck out, Andrews hit a pop fly ball for an out, and Childress grounded out. The Trojans were likewise retired in order during the bottom of the sixth inning, following fly out, pop out, and ground out.

The top of the seventh inning started with Hernandez being walked. However, he was caught stealing second base soon after.

After Morgan hit a single, LeCroy hit a pop fly ball for an out. After Morgan stole second base, Gilbreath brought him home with an RBI single, raising the score to 5-1.

After Gilbreath reached second base on a passed ball, Wright brought him home with an RBI single, bringing the score to 6-1. Following Wright reaching second base on a passed ball, Carpenter would hit an RBI double, driving Wright home and raising the score to 7-1.

After Potts and Andrews were both hit by pitches, Childress swatted a 2-RBI single, bringing Carpenter and Potts home and raising their lead to 9-1. The run ended after Hernandez grounded into a fielder’s choice, where Andrews was tagged out at third base.

The Eagles finished the job with three consecutive LeCroy strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping off a 9-1 victory.

As a team, the Eagles batted 11 for 29 (.379) from the plate. Carpenter and Wright led with three hits each. Gilbreath and Morgan added two hits each, while Childress added one hit.

Gilbreath, Morgan, and Wright were the leading scorers with two runs each. Carpenter, LeCroy, and Potts added one run each.

LeCroy pitched a complete game on the mound. Across seven innings, he struck out 15 batters and only conceded three hits, one walk, and one earned run.

With this win, as well as recent tournament results, the Eagles are now 5-8 on the season. Their next game is Tuesday, when they travel to Fruitvale to take on the Fruitvale Bobcats.
