WINNSBORO — The Como-Pickton Eagles saw their season come to a heartbreaking end this past weekend, as they lost their Bi-District playoff series to the Maud Cardinals. Despite initially taking the lead in the series, the Eagles weren’t able to close it out, as the Cardinals won Games Two and Three to complete a comeback.

In the first game, held at The Ballpark at Raiderland on the campus Winnsboro High School, the Eagles earned a hard fought 3-1 victory. After initially falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Eagles responded with three unanswered runs and the defense held the Cardinals scoreless the rest of the way, leading to a big win.

As a team, the Eagles batted 4 for 22 (.182) from the plate. Sean Carpenter led with two hits, while Kevin Hernandez and Dane Oud added one hit each.

Tucker LeCroy, Oud, and Kobie Wright all scored one run each.

LeCroy earned the win on the mound. In seven innings, he struck out 11 batters, conceding just three walks, one hit, and one run.

In the second game, played at Hornet Memorial Field on the campus of Hooks High School, the Eagles suffered an 11-6 loss. Despite initially starting strong, they would be outplayed the rest of the way, as the Cardinals forced a decisive third game in the series.

As a team, the Eagles batted 9 for 26 (.346) from the plate. LeCroy and Oud led with two hits each, while Ben Brewer, Adrian Chambly, Cade Childress, Hernandez, and Wright added one hit each.

LeCroy finished as the leading scorer with two runs. Brewer, Chambly, Childress, and Joel Newsom all scored one run each.

Carpenter suffered the loss on the mound. In three innings, he surrendered six runs (four earned), five hits, and four walks, tallying four strikeouts.

Childress failed to a record an out in his relief appearance, giving up two earned runs, two walks, and one hit.

Wright pitched two innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs, and two walks, managing two strikeouts. Brewer pitched the last inning, tallying two strikeouts.

In the decisive third and final game of the series, the Cardinals handed the Eagles a 15-2 loss. Maud would outplay the Eagles again and run-ruled them after five inning, winning the series two games to one.

As a team, the Eagles batted 7 for 19 (.368) from the plate. Chambly, Hernandez, and LeCroy came up with two hits each, while Wright added one. Hernandez and LeCroy both scored two runs each.

Oud took the loss on the mound. In 2 2/3 innings, he gave up 13 runs (12 earned), six hits, and six walks, tallying three strikeouts. Payton Hunt pitched the final 1 1/3 inning in relief, surrendering three hits, two earned runs, and one walk.

With these results, the Eagles’ season has come to an end. They end the season with an overall record of 12-14-1, finishing as District runners-up and Bi-District finalists.

Game Three would mark the final high school baseball game for three senior Eagles: Hernandez, Newson, and Wright.

The Eagles will look to improve in the off-season and make a deeper playoff run next year.
