COMO-PICKTON— The Como-Pickton Eagles hosted Wolfe City Friday for their homecoming game. The Eagles entered the game on a two-game losing streak.

Como-Pickton got the ball first and took little time moving it up the field. After a pair of first downs, running back Cameron Ray broke open for a 23-yard touchdown rush, putting his team on the board first. The Eagles didn’t score on the 2-point conversion, giving them a 6-0 lead with 9:27 remaining in the first quarter.

Wolfe City answered back by putting together a strong drive of their own. The Eagles were able to put them in multiple third-and-long situations, but Wolfe City was able to convert each time. After marching all the way down the field, Wofle City eventually capped-off the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass, taking the 7-6 lead with 4:37 left in the first quarter.

Later in the half, Como-Pickton had a very long drive, converting on multiple third downs. The Eagles marched down into the red zone, and on second and goal, quarterback Jhonathan Mejia scored on a quarterback keep from the 3-yard line. The 2-point conversion was good, when Mejia found Canyon Thomas on a pass, making the Eagles lead 14-7 with 5:56 to play in the first half.

The defense stood out the rest of the way, with neither team scoring for the remainder of the first half or in the third quarter. With just under a minute to play, Wolfe City got the ball back on their own 38- yard line with no timeouts left.

After a gain of 7 yards on the first play, Wolfe City fumbled the ball, and Como-Pickton’s Jackson Monk picked it up and took it to the house, putting the game away for the Eagles. Como-Pickton would then recover their onside kick and kneel the clock out, walking away with the win, 20-7.

Ray led the way for Como-Pickton, picking up 114 rushing yards on 21 carries. Monk had a big day as well, rushing for 79 yards on 16 tries.

Monk had an even better day defensively, finishing the game with 20 total tackles, along with his touchdown that put the game away for the Eagles. Braden Miller and Gabe Garcia each had impressive outings as well, racking up nine tackles each.

The win gets Como-Pickton back to .500, making them 2-2 on the season. They will travel to Celeste this week, to face the 2-3 Blue Devils. Celeste beat Honey Grove, 20-8 on Friday.
