Eagles fall in extras to Commerce, 24-15

Oud launches two home runs

COMO — The Como-Pickton Eagles suffered their sixth consecutive loss Tuesday following a 24-15 extra innings loss to the Commerce Tigers at War Eagle Field. Despite pulling ahead late in the game, the Eagles would surrender 10 runs late in the game that proved to be their undoing, leading to a disappointing loss.

The Tigers would score first in the top of the first inning with a run, taking a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first inning, the Eagles would get on the board. Payton Hunt, Tucker LeCroy, Kobie Wright, and Dane Oud all scored, giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the second inning, the Tigers scored a trio of runs, tying the score at 4-4. The Eagles responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. LeCroy and Oud scored again, as the Eagles pulled ahead 6-4.

The Tigers would tie the score again in the third inning with a pair of runs, evening the score at 6-6. Later on, Commerce scored seven runs in the top of the fourth inning, pulling ahead 13-6.

The Eagles would score three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Oud, Joel Newsom, and Jakob Kemepenaar all scored, trimming the score to 139. The Eagles scored again in the fifth inning when Oud scored again, cutting the score to 13-10.

In the sixth inning, the Eagles reclaimed their lead when Oud hit a grand slam, where Hunt, LeCroy, and Wright also scored, to put them back on top, 1413. The Tigers would score another run in the top of the seventh inning, tying the score at 14-14. The Eagles were then held scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Tigers would score 10 runs, as the Eagles’ pitching staff struggled, giving the Tigers a 24-14 lead. Though Oud launched another home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, it was too little, too late, as the Tigers pulled off a 24-15 win.

As a team, the Eagles batted 10 for 38 (.263) from the plate. Oud led the way, going 4/6. LeCroy added three hits, Hunt added two hits, and Wright tallied home hit.

Oud would be the leading scorer with six runs. LeCroy was second with three runs. Hunt and Wright scored two runs each, while Kempenaar and Newsom added one run each.

Oud started at pitcher. Across two innings, he struck out five batters, conceding seven walks, six runs (five earned), and one hit. Wright pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing six earned runs, four walks, and two hits, notching two strikeouts.

Ben Brewer failed to record an out in his pithing appearance, surrendering four walks and one earned run. Hunt then pitched 3 1/3 innings, recording three strikeouts and allowing four walks, two hits, and one earned run.

Jeremy Flowers would fail to record an out in his pitching appearance, giving up three earned runs and two hits. Kempenaar didn’t fare any better, allowing four earned runs, four walks, and a hit in his appearance. Newsom got the final three outs, allowing three earned runs, two walks, and two hits.

With the loss, the Eagles dropped to 0-6 on the season. They resumed action Thursday, competing in the Cooper Tournament.
