COMO — The Como-Pickton Eagles fell just short in their season opener against the Quitman Bulldogs at War Eagle Field Monday, falling 7-6. Though they held a 4-0 lead at one point, the Eagles weren’t able to hold onto it, as the Bulldogs spoiled their season opener.

The first three innings would be scoreless, as both defenses did a great job of keeping the offenses at bay. The fourth inning would see the Eagles take the lead.

The Eagles first scored when Tucker LeCroy scored on an RBI double by Kobie Wright, taking a 1-0 lead. Soon after, Wright scored on a passed ball, extending the Eagles’ lead to 2-0.

Later on, Dane Oud scored after stealing home, bringing the score to 3-0. Later on, Sean Carpenter scored a run to make the score 4-0 before the fourth inning concluded.

The Bulldogs then scored four runs of their own in the fifth inning, tying the score at 4-4. Quitman then scored another run in the sixth inning to pull ahead 5-4.

The top of the seventh inning saw the Bulldogs add two more runs, extending their lead to 7-4. Though the Eagles tried to rally back with runs by Payton Hunt and LeCroy, it wasn’t enough, as the Bulldogs held on for a 7-6 victory.

As a team, the Eagles batted 5 for 28 (.179) from the plate. Carpenter, Hunt, Jakob Kempenaar, LeCroy, and Wright all came up with one hit each.

LeCroy was the Eagles’ top scorer with two runs. Carpenter, Hunt, Oud, and Wright all scored one run each.

LeCroy started the game at pitcher, pitching four nohit innings and striking out nine batters, walking only one. Oud would pitch the final three innings. Despite notching seven strikeouts, he gave up seven runs (four earned), five walks, and one hit, suffering the loss.

With the loss, the Eagles began their season at 0-1. They resumed action Thursday, competing in the Chisum Tournament.
