Cumby girls win district meet at NH

As clouds loomed overhead and moderate breeze blew, runners competed in Wednesday’s 2A District 15 meet at North Hopkins ISD as the Cumby girls took home the team gold and Jonathan Hatley claiming first place over in the boys’ race.

The top three teams and top ten individuals will qualify for regionals, which will be held Oct. 25-26 at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. Varsity girls run at noon, and varsity boys run at 12:30 p.m.

GIRLS

Bailey Neal of Como-Pickton took home the individual gold with a time of 13:28. Teammate Kara Tifft finished third with 14:10, and Fernanda Palacios and Katie Tifft landed in eighth (15:42) and ninth (15:57) respectively. Alli Cockrum finished 15th overall with 17:46.

Cumby has five finishers in the top ten at the meet. Macie Morales finished second behind Neal, and then Cumby runner Ashlyn Hudson earned fourth place, Lilly Campbell fifth place, Melissa Rogel sixth, and Jacie Morales seventh. EmmaJohn Evans finished in 12th.

For North Hopkins, Chyloe Vargas-Booth finished 11th.

The Cumby team won the meet with 24 points, beating out Como-Pickton, who was second with 35, and Cooper, who had 70. All three advanced to regionals.

BOYS

For the meet’s host, Jonathan Hatley took home the individual gold, and his teammates Lio Alvarez and Juan Gonzales finished fifth and sixth respectively. Clinton Degen landed in tenth place.

Como-Pickton also had a good showing with Giovanni Munoz and Kasey Neal. Munoz finished in second with a time of 17:38, and Kasey Neal landed fourth (18:38). Koalton Burkhart and Jared Satterfield earned eighth (20:16) and ninth (20:41) respectively.

Cumby’s Chayton Vaughn earned the individual bronze, and Dakota Ridings finished 14th.
