UNION HILL- The Sulphur Bluff Bears traveled to Union Hill Tuesday, looking to bounce back after a tough 67-54 loss to Avinger in their previous game. The Bears won their previous matchup against Union Hill on Jan. 8 by a commanding score of 65-38.

Defense was the key for Sulphur Bluff early in Tuesday’s game, holding Union Hill to just six points in the opening quarter. Sulphur Bluff was able to double that amount with 13 points, giving themselves a seven-point lead heading into the second quarter.

In the second frame Sulphur Bluff played even better defensively, shutting Union Hill out for the entire frame. The Bears added another 11 points of their own, taking a 24-6 lead at the half.

Union Hill finally found some offense in the third quarter, more than doubling their total in the game, posting 12 points in the third frame. Sulphur Bluff was still able to outscore them, however, scoring 13 points of their own. The Bears kept things going in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 47-22 win.

Dewitt Brookins led the way for the Bears, scoring 15 points in the 25-point win. Behind him were Montana Hurley with nine points, Shane Johnson with eight points, Brandon Branom with seven points and Matthew Overly with six points. Blake Hume provided two points.

The win makes Sulphur Bluff 14-10 on the season and 6-3 in district play. The Bears currently trail Saltillo and Avery and have half a game advantage over Avinger for the third seed. Sulphur Bluff will hope to finish their season on a strong note, traveling to Bloomburg Tuesday and Saltillo Friday. Both games are set to begin at 6 p.m.
