The Sulphur Springs ISD Board of Trustees closed out 2022 on a high note.

Early in the proceedings the school board handed out official certificates and posed for photos with several groups.

The Sulphur Springs Cross Country team had a historic season and they were lauded for their accomplishments.

The girls varsity team boldly went where no SSHS team had gone before, the State Finals. The team finished the year at 15th in the State Class 4A rankings.

Sulphur Springs head cross country coach Ross Hicks introduced all team members and coaches.

Hicks said, 'Success is a motto with these girls. Coming in 15th in the state is an unbelievable achievement.'

Another group to get recognized was the Sulphur Springs High School Marching band. They were represented by head director, Spencer Emmert.

The band, marching more than 140 students, also made school history.

In their first attempt at the state UIL marching finals in San Antonio, the group finished fourth the Class 4A State final rankings. That's the highest finish ever for a Sulphur Springs High School marching band.

'The kids worked so hard, we felt such support and motivation from people in the community,' Emmert said.

'Taking about 150 kids to San Antonio was a big undertaking. We were able to do it because of support from the school board and the community. To get fourth in the state is just amazing,' Emmert said.

The Sulphur Springs Wildcat band will have a chance to go after another title next year.

Due to change in the UIL policy, the state marching contest will in the future be held every year, not every other year as was the case recently.

The board then heard from Craig Toney, ESL Director.

Toney and board gave special exemplary Gomez and Gomez Dual Language awards to Travis Elementary teachers Ana Karen Miranda and Lidia Mejia.

Toney said the awards came from Richard Gomez, the official who designed forms used.

Toney called the awards, 'a major accomplishment.'

In other action handled by the board, a resignation was accepted from Kylile Wyly, campus secretary at Bush Primary. New personnel approved included Alexandra Best at Bush Primary and Brittany Jones at Bowie Primary. Barbara Bloodgood and Kourtney McDonald remained with the district in new positions.

Quarterly reports were approved. The board reappointed Byran White and Mike Horne to the Hopkins County Tax Appraisal Board of Directors.
