Local plans for the total solar eclipse

There’s so much going on that it is hard to keep up. Of course, there’s the total eclipse on Monday, April 8, and unless the world ends that day, life will return to normal afterward. So, here are a few reminders for the next few days. And, if you have a free event you wish to see posted, send it to enola@ssnewstelegram. com.

A Plant Sale at Church of the Nazarene will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 8 a.m. until dark at 1300 League Street.

Main Street Theater’s “Little Shop of Horrors” will be staged the weekend of April 5 and 6. Get tickets and information at communityplayersinc. com.

A Total Eclipse all-day free concert by local musicians will be held in downtown Sulphur Springs on Saturday, April 6, starting at 1 p.m. with The Paper Dolls, followed by Jason Waldon and the Alibis at 3:30 p.m., and at 7 p.m. by Dub and the Luv Machines. Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Hopkins County Museum and Heritage Park at 416 North Jackson St., will be open with special hours for the total eclipse weekend. On Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. On Sunday, April 7, the hours are from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.; hosts will be in period clothing. On Monday, April 8, the park and museum will be closed, but the parking area will be open for eclipse viewers at $20 per vehicle from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., with concessions and restrooms available. Bring lawn chairs.

First Baptist Church plans an outdoor worship service downtown on Celebration Plaza from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, with a full band, music, and a message from Dr. Jeff Gravens. Bring a lawn chair and dress is casual.

A free 65-plus Health Fair is planned for Wednesday, April 10, from 9 a.m. until noon at The Roc of Sulphur Springs First Baptist Church, located downtown at 115 Putman St. Seniors who visit the booths can receive free health information and screenings.

Remember, many businesses in Sulphur Springs will opt to close on Monday, April 8, due to the total eclipse. Others may close between the hours of prime viewing time, such as from noon until 3 p.m.

Due to the total eclipse, public schools in Hopkins County will be closed on Monday, April 8.

There will be no activities at the Senior Citizens Center on Monday, April 8, the day of the total eclipse.
