Lady Bears continue winning streak with road victory

Stanley posts 14 points, 17 rebound

AVERY- The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears traveled to Avery Tuesday, looking to pick up their third consecutive win. The Lady Bears entered the day with a good bit of momentum, after beating Yantis 61-30 and Union Hill 81-14 in their last two games.

The game opened with a close first quarter in which neither team was able to gain much of an advantage over the other. After trading baskets back and forth Sulphur Bluff led at the end of the frame by a score of 14-10.

In the second quarter the Lady Bears turned things up a notch defensively, allowing just two points in the entire quarter. Sulphur Buff was also able to add another 12 points of their own, taking a 26-12 lead at half time.

The second half was just as close as the first quarter was, with Sulphur Bluff able to outscore Avery by just one point in the third frame. In the fourth quarter Avery was able to outscore the Lady Bears for the first time, but Sulphur Bluff was still able to pull out a 49-37 win.

Skylar Stanley led the way for the Lady Bears, scoring 14 points and grabbing an impressive 17 rebounds for another double-double this season. Bailey Neal and Molly Kelley were big contributors as well, each finishing with nine points.

Alley Collet was another Lady Bear who had a strong game. Collet scored seven points, while also collecting four assists, creating opportunities for both herself as well as her teammates.

Other scorers for Sulphur Bluff were Jada Wade who had five points, as well as five rebounds and five assists, Allie Eason who had four points, and Tori Raine who had two points and six rebounds.

“We started out really slow on defense and let them get some easy baskets, but we tightened up our defense in the second quarter and only allowed the to score two points,” coach Zandra Peyton said. “Each of the Lady Bears were able to get on the scoreboard.”

After opening district play with three straight losses, Sulphur Bluff has bounced back with three wins to make their district record 3-3. The Lady Bears return home Friday, Jan. 22 to host Yantis at 6 p.m.
